What does “grounding the panel” actually mean?
It means connecting your electrical service to the earth through a grounding electrode system — typically two 8-foot copper-clad ground rods, a concrete-encased electrode (rebar in the footing), or a metal underground water pipe — and running a grounding electrode conductor from that system back to your main panel.
Isn't my house already grounded?
Usually, but not always correctly. On older homes we routinely find a single ground rod where two are required, rods that were driven and never actually connected, corroded or broken clamps, missing water pipe bonds, or grounding that was never updated when the service was upgraded.
What's the difference between grounding and bonding?
Grounding connects the system to the earth. Bonding ties all the metal parts together — water piping, gas piping, panel enclosures, appliance frames — so everything sits at the same electrical potential. Both are required, and bonding is the part that actually clears a fault and trips your breaker.
What are the real benefits?
- Breakers trip when they should. A proper low-impedance fault path is what makes an overcurrent device open in a fraction of a second instead of letting a hot conductor energize something you can touch.
- Shock protection. Metal appliance housings, panel doors, and boxes stay at earth potential instead of becoming energized during a fault.
- Fire risk reduction. Faults get cleared quickly rather than arcing.
- Surge and lightning path. Gives transient energy a route to earth instead of through your wiring and electronics.
- Stable voltage reference. Reduces stray voltage and noise that shortens the life of appliances, HVAC boards, and electronics.
- Code compliance. Required for permits and inspections, and a standard item on home inspection and insurance reports.
Will grounding fix my flickering lights?
Usually no. Flickering is most often a loose neutral, a failing service connection, or an overloaded circuit. We'll diagnose the actual cause rather than sell you a fix that won't solve it.
I have GFCI outlets — doesn't that cover me?
GFCIs protect people from shock and are permitted in some retrofit situations, but they don't provide an equipment grounding path. Surge protectors, in particular, are largely useless without a real ground.
Does grounding protect my house from a lightning strike?
It's not a lightning protection system. It does give surge energy a controlled path to earth and it's a prerequisite for whole-home surge protection to work at all.
My house has two-prong outlets. What are my options?
Three paths: run new grounded circuits (best, most invasive), install GFCI protection with the required labeling (code-compliant, lower cost, no ground), or do a full rewire. We'll walk you through the trade-offs for your specific home.
What about my subpanel?
Neutrals and grounds must be separated in every subpanel, with the neutral bar isolated from the enclosure. Bonded subpanels are one of the most common defects we correct — they put current on ground conductors and on metal piping.
Do I need a permit?
Grounding electrode and service bonding work is permitted and inspected in most Triangle and Triad jurisdictions. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
How long does it take?
Most grounding electrode and bonding corrections are a half-day. Add time if the panel needs to be de-energized or the utility has to be scheduled.
How do I know if I need this?
Common red flags: home built before 1970, a panel upgrade with no visible ground rods, corroded or missing ground clamps at the meter base, a home inspection report citing grounding deficiencies, or repeated failure of electronics and surge protectors.
